Everything that exists either exists necessarily (by its own nature) or contingently (dependent on another). The universe consists of contingent beings. If there were a time when nothing existed, nothing would exist now (since contingent beings cannot self-cause). Therefore, a necessary, self-existent Being must exist. Sproul called this “the most powerful argument for the existence of God.”
R.C. Sproul (1939–2017) remains one of the most influential Reformed theologians and apologists of the twentieth century. Unlike Cornelius Van Til’s presuppositionalism or the evidentialism of Josh McDowell, Sproul championed a rooted in medieval scholasticism and Reformed orthodoxy. For Sproul, apologetics is not merely defensive but positive: it seeks to demonstrate the truth of Christianity through rational argumentation accessible to all people.
