In the early 2000s, French cinema produced a wave of transgressive horror films, including Inside (2007), Frontier(s) (2007), and Martyrs (2008). These films rejected jump scares in favor of sustained, psychological dread and graphic physical violence. Martyrs became the movement’s thesis statement.
