Betawi, Jakarta’s native ethnic group, has been underrepresented on screen since the 1990s. Bokeb integrates (the Jangkrik spirit, the Kuntilanak of the mangrove), giving a national and global audience an authentic glimpse into a culture often eclipsed by Javanese and Sundanese narratives.
