After the events of Sonic 2 , Dr. Eggman’s crashed Death Egg has landed on Angel Island. Sonic runs there to stop him from repairing it. There, he meets Knuckles the Echidna, guardian of the island’s Master Emerald. Tricked by Eggman into believing Sonic is a thief, Knuckles fights Sonic, steals the Chaos Emeralds, and repeatedly sabotages Sonic’s progress.
