Set in the mid-1990s in Haridwar, the film follows Prem (Ayushmann Khurrana), a shy, directionless young man who runs his father’s failing video cassette rental store, and his marriage to Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar), a confident, educated woman from a better-off family. The match is arranged to save face and finances after an impulsive decision by Prem’s father. Sandhya is heavier than the era’s conventional heroine and is initially resentful of Prem’s lack of ambition; Prem, embarrassed and awkward, treats the marriage as a burden rather than a relationship to nurture. What follows is less a dramatic battle than a gradual, often comic, learning process for both.
