Plot and Structure Set in postwar Europe, The Nun opens with a gruesome discovery at a cloistered abbey: a nun has committed suicide under violent, supernatural circumstances. Father Burke (played by Demian Bichir), an experienced priest with a skeptical-but-haunted demeanor, is sent by the Vatican along with a young novitiate, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), to investigate.
