– Early chapters flirt dangerously with a “feral vs. civilized” trope that can feel colonial if not careful. Tarzan is not a pet. Jane is not a savior. The best moments show mutual bewilderment: Tarzan cannot grasp why Jane would cry over a dead antelope she named; Jane cannot understand why Tarzan would leave her alone for three days to “listen to the ground.” It’s messy.
