For six years, students study in either national primary schools (Sekolah Kebangsaan), where the medium of instruction is Bahasa Malaysia, or national-type primary schools (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan), which teach in Mandarin (SJKC) or Tamil (SJKT). This bifurcation is one of the most defining—and controversial—features of Malaysian schooling.
